Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXX!
Thank you for asking on HCM!
I understand your concern, and would like to explain that "prominent unfolding of the aorta" is not rarely seen in elderly individuals (as the ascending portion of the aorta increases in length and gives the impression of a shadow on the left heart border. This leads to a widened mediastinum.
As your mom is complaining of chest pain, the first disorder to differentiate with is aneurysm/dissection of the ascending thoracic aorta. A trans-thoracic cardiac ultrasound may be helpful to detect. If suspicions are raised a trans-esophageal cardiac ultrasound, thoracic angio CT or MRI will definitely rule in/out this life-threatening disorder, which deserves immediate surgical correction, if confirmed.
Other alternative explanations may be identified by the above mentioned imagine tests as well.
Hope to have been helpful to you!
Feel free to ask me whenever you need! Greetings! Dr. Iliri
