It is advised in many conditions like pain abdomen,vomiting,hematuria(blood in urine).
It is very helpful in initial diagnosis.
It can detect intestinal perforation(shown as free gas in abdomen),renal,ureter or urinary bladder calculus etc.
It can also show calcification in many cases like fibroid calcification in uterus etc.
It is also very helpful in intestinal obstruction.Obstruction may be shown as multiple air-fluid level in abdomen.

Can it show abnormalities such as tumors? One doc says it does the other says it doesnt its very confusing.

Abdominal X-ray can show soft tissue shadows if tumour is large.It may also displace bowel loops to one side or compress it depending upon location of tumour.So,X-ray findings are always vague and it is not very much informative in cases of abdominal tumour.
It need further investigations like ultrasound,CT scan or MRI for confirmation.
