What Does This Chest X-ray Report Indicate?

default
Posted on Thu, 29 Dec 2016
Question: Hi, I would like to question on behalf of my father.
My father is 94 years old. Recently he had cold and cough with severe congestion in the lungs.
The doctor asked for a chest x-ray.
Looking at the x-ray, the doctor said nothing to worry. And that there is congestion and added one more tablet. This was 10 days back.
Only today I collected the report from the lab and according to it, it says there is 'Aortic knuckle calcification'.
What does this mean?
Do we have to take any action?
Does he have to undergo any surgery at this age??
Please clarify..
Thank you!

Brief Answer:
Aortic knuckle calcification is a sign of advanced atherosclerosis

Detailed Answer:
Hi, welcome to HCM,

Aortic knuckle calcification is a sign of advanced atherosclerosis or hardening of arteries that is common at this age.
I do not think we should subject him to any test at this age.
Giving blood thinners is also tricky at this age.
One thing we can do is to give him statins. You can consult your doctor about this.
You can revert with additional clarifications.

Brief Answer:
all statins have side effects called myopathy and can affect the liver.

Detailed Answer:
Hi, all statins have side effects called myopathy and can affect the liver. I would suggest Rosuvastatin 10 mg at his age.
You can add CO-enzyme Q-10 capsule once a day to avoid myopathy.
