Brief Answer:
Dietary guidelines for Anaemia, low sodium, vit.d and vit.b 12 deficiency

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Greetings…..

The continuous tiredness, weakness and fatigue are common when the blood haemoglobin level is low. Your body requires it to carry oxygen to different parts of the body. The condition may be caused due to multiple factors but dietary deficiency of iron or folate is the most common.

To improve the condition it is important to take iron rich foods along with a liberal intake of folic acid rich foods and vitamin C.

Foods that would help to improve Haemoglobin are:

Iron– Lean portions of red meat, dark green leafy vegetables, egg, dry apricots, whole wheat bread, dry Fruits like prunes and raisins, beans, lentil, chick peas and soya bean, Rice Flakes with lemon juice, Pumpkin seeds and watermelon seeds, honey, spring onion, beetroot and radish.

Vit B12 Rich Foods – This vitamin is required for making the red blood cells. Sources include milk and its products, egg, whey extracts, salmon, swiss cheese, mozzarella and feta cheese, whey powder, yeast extract spreads (available online) and foods fortified with Vit B12, like soy products, dairy alternatives and breakfast cereals.

Folic Acid Rich Foods- Folic acid is also an important nutrient that helps in the cure of anemia. Its sources are dried beans, lentils, soaked almonds, spinach, broccoli, cabbage, asparagus, oranges and whole grain breads.

Include Vit C rich foods like orange, Amla, lemon etc. in the diet, for conversion of food irons to the useable form. Avoid taking milk and its products with iron rich foods.

Both Vit B12 and Vit D are mostly found in non-vegetarian foods.

Vit D - Milk and milk products, Whole eggs, liver, fish like salmon, Herring and sardine, soya products, UV treated mushrooms, fortified cereals and take sufficient sun light for vitamin D synthesis in your body. Always check the food labels to make sure that the food that you are buying has been fortified with Vit 12, Vit D or Both.

A sensible exposure to Sun is also important to get Vit D as our body synthesis it under the sunlight.

Here are few tips to help you deal with low sodium:

•     Increase the total salt (sodium) intake.
•     Consume plenty of fluids like tender coconut water (with a pinch of salt), fresh lemon juice with salt and clear soups with salt in it.
•     Include sodium rich foods like table salt, processes foods, soy sauce, olives, sweet potato, spinach, guava, passion fruit etc.
•     Completely avoid the alcoholic beverages.
•     Get your OTC (over the counter medications) evaluated by the doctor as some of these like diuretics and beta blockers are found to lower the sodium.

Make sure that you take a balanced diet, stay hydrated and take sufficient rest.

Hope this helps. Please feel free to contact me for further discussion.
