Brief Answer:
The report does not state it is malignant and needs to be studied

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for your question.

This tumor is an uncommon type of growth found in women and can grow rapidly. These tumors (PHYLLODES) can be benign, malignant (cancer), or something in between (meaning they can transform into a malignancy). It would appear that the pathologist is asking to study the specimens a bit more by staining and identifying the specific types of cells present which will tell him what type of mitotic or DIVISIONAL ACTIVITY is going on in the cells of this mass which typically characterizes whether it is benign or cancerous. So you'll have to wait for a bit more reporting to be done by pathology to know for sure what their final conclusion is for reporting purposes.

The most common differentiation of this type of tumor is 60% benign, 10% as borderline malignant, and 30% as definitely cancerous. I repeat, in this case the pathologist has not yet decided which of those 3 categories we are dealing with.

There can be lesions found in other parts of the body (even if it turns out NOT to be cancer) so it is a good idea to be doing checks of the torso, pulmonary scans, and pay attention to deeper pains that may look like something were pressing bone or muscle. The interesting thing is that even though these tumors can be BENIGN....metastatic lesions to distant parts of the body can occur 10-20% of the time without the tumor actually be CANCEROUS.

I agree with surgery at this time because no other treatment such as chemo or radiation has ever proven to have worthwhile long term results. The tumor needs to come out completely with wide margins but because the tumor is usually of a fibrous nature its excision in its entirety is usually easily accomplished. The breast could require some plastic reconstructive surgery but mastectomy does not necessarily need to be done.
