Question : Dear Dr,
XXXX is 2 months old. Because of vacuum-assisted vaginal delivery, he had one swelling on his head and the swelling was reduced after 2-3 weeks. Now since yesterday, we are observing the swelling again on the same area so we visited our pediatrician today and did neurosonography today. as per the report there are some fluid deposit and everything else was normal. But not sure what was the source of this fluid. Can you help me to understand if this type of case happens and what are the other symptoms we need to observe ?
Please find the attched report for your reference.

Brief Answer:
Normal. Not a cause for concern.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I have gone carefully through your query and understand your concerns. I have gone through the attached report. Let me assure you that the report is fine. The main concern that we have is whether internal bleeding (involving the brain) has occurred. That is not the case here. Due to the suction force of the vacuum during delivery, some blood vessels had ruptured and the scalp hematoma (caput succedaneum) was formed. It is simply a collection of blood in the scalp. This blood gradually gets absorbed leaving a watery fluid. Eventually the fluid too gets absorbed. However, the absorption has left an empty space which again has led to collection of fluid. Eventually the space too will get filled. Till then I would not worry if there is some new fluid collection.

There is no specific point that calls for observation. If the child is otherwise active and fine there is no need to worry.

Let me know if I could help further.

Regards

Thank you for quick response !! I had one more question..
As this swollen part is behind his head, it always touches when he sleeps. do we use special type of pillow?
Also, wanted to know what is the typical recovery period for this type of swelling? Do we need to stop head bathing? I am suspecting this repeat swelling is because of regular head bath since last week.

Brief Answer:
Unrelated to bathing. No specific precautions.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for writing back. Just use a soft pillow and it would be fine. Nothing special. You simply need not bother about the swelling. Just take care that the baby does not keep lying on the same position for a long time. No specific recovery period. No need to stop washing the head while bathing. Do not worry, it is unrelated to taking bath.

Regards
