What Does This Ultrasound During 13 Weeks Of Pregnancy Indicate?

default
Posted on Wed, 17 Dec 2014
Question: Hi,

Following our previous discussion, this is the current situation.

My wife had her ultrasound and went for check up today. The doctor said placenta is low lying. She is in XXXXXXX and scheduled to come back to Sydney on 28th November, as we live in Australia, and only found out she was pregnant when we went to vacation in XXXXXXX . The doctor did not say specifically YES or NO regarding flying at this stage.

I am uploading all the reports for your review. My question is, given the data in report, is there any hazard in flying. She will be having wheelchair facility in the flight, so she does not have to walk or carry luggage.

From Dhaka to Singapore the flight is 4 hours, then 50 minutes transit and then flight from Singapore to Sydney is around 8 hours.

I should also mention in Dhaka she is not having proper care as she is staying in her sister's place and all of the family members are working. So its better she comes back where she can have proper care.

Looking forward to your suggestion

Brief Answer:
She can travel for 6-8 hours by air.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for trusting us with your health concern.
Your wife is 13 weeks pregnant right now. I have seen the attached report. The placenta is posterior and low lying. It is not covering the internal os. The chances of any bleeding are minimal as the retroplacental area is normal.
She can travel as per the plan for better care.
Certain measures to be taken like:

1) In flight- She will get up and walk around at least once an hour and drink plenty of fluids.
2) Take some medications in her kit bag for pregnancy related problems like heartburn, skin complaints, constipation, vomiting etc. Along with she must take sanitary napkin for emergency purpose.
3) Check travel insurance policy for pregnancy before booking flight.

Please feel free to discuss further. I will be glad to answer the follow up queries that you have.
Wishing you good health.
Regards.

in case bleeding occurs during flight, what does that imply? will it be fatal for the baby progressing to miscarriage? will bleeding affect the overall pregnancy?

my wife is very nervous about bleeding. she already had some spotting, but no major issues so far.

Brief Answer:
Bleeding is not fatal

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
Bleeding after 13 weeks is not fatal or causes a miscarriage unless the bleeding is very heavy. In her case no such heavy episode is expected in case she takes adequate precautions like not lifting heavy weight and not climbing the stairs too frequently.
In case any mild spotting happens all she has to do is to lie down and take rest. The mild bleeding can be controlled with rest and medicines. If the bleeding stops then there is no risk to pregnancy or the baby.
Just be relaxed.
Hope my answer is helpful.

My wife just called me up and said she is having water discharge. Her underwear and pant got wet and had to wear a pad.

And after coming back from doctor she had 3-4 drops of brown discharge. Is this still normal and safe at this current stage? Her doctor in XXXXXXX cannot be consulted over phone, that is why asking you again and again. Thanks for your patience.

Brief Answer:
Travelling not advisable.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
If she is having a watery discharge with brownish spotting then it is worrisome. Under these conditions it is not advisable for her to travel. Better to take rest till the discharge and spotting or brownish discharge subsides. Travelling and stress associated with the travelling can cause more bleeding.

Is there any timeline like how long should we wait? For her its always been discontinuous. It happens (brownish/watery discharge) once or twice in one day and then its gone for some days...

Flight is on 28th early morning. If the discharge subsides tonight and in case does not happen in the next 4-5 days should she fly? She is mentally depressed and wants to come back badly, though I am insisting on staying back a little more.

Brief Answer:
Plan the travel if bleeding stops.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
After the discharge stops completely she should wait for at least one week and if she feels normal with no brownish discharge then a journey can be planned.
If the discharge stops tonight then the journey can be planned for 28th.
Feeling depressed can further aggravate such episodes. It can also affect the normal growth of the baby. It is better to travel keeping the fingers crossed.
Regards.
