Question: I have pain in the back while eating. I had ultra sound of my abdomen done yesterday for mildly elevated LFT. Ultrasound report came back with fatty liver and fat in pancreas. I have had acid reflux for a long time now. What could be causing my pain in the back, Google is frightening.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Welcome and thanks for your query.
Please let me have more information. Where exactly is the pain? Does it occur at the time of eating as the food goes down or is after or before eating? If after eating, how many minutes later. Is it related to the type of food like spicy or acidic food? Have you had a serum amylase done? If so what was the value?
Fatty liver is not the cause of abdominal pain. Inflammation of the pancreas ( pancreatits) can. Do you take any alcohol? If you do it can be a cause and should be discontinued.
An inflammation or ulceration of the stomach or duodenum also can produce back pain related to food.
For the present, unless the pain is very severe, try taking an antacid like Gaviscon and see if it influences the pain. If the pain is severe, I think it would be better to see a doctor, have yourself examined and investigated.

It is in the middle back and I get the pain after a few swallows. It is not severe but i know it is there. It happened twice last week and twice today, I was burning excessively though.
would yesterday's ultrasound shown something sinister like inflammation in pancreas? what is serum amalyse? I don't drink alcohol.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for the information.
Serum amylase is a blood test to know if there is any inflammation of the pancreas which is a cause of back pain.
From your description of symptoms, it is less likely to be due to pancreatitis.
It is likely to be due to an inflammation of the esophagus or esophagitis.
It can be confirmed by doing an upper GI endoscopy.
Gaviscon would give relief. If the pain persists, it would be better to see a gastroenterologist and have an endoscopy done. Doctor might also prescribe a PPI for better relief and healing.
You can also help by eating bland food, avoiding caffeinated beverages and acidic food.
Wish you quick recovery and good health
