Question : I'm a 62 year old male and recently did an ultrasound of my prostate :
Following are the results:
1. Prostate
The prostate measured 20cc in whole gland volume, with a median lobe volume of 5cc.
The size of the prostate is 3.4cm LS, x 4.7cm TS x 2.3cm AP.
The overall glandular echotexture appeared grosly normal.
The peripheral zones appeared symmetrical in size and echotexture.
Normal seminal vesicles.
2. Kidney
Right kidney measured 10.8cm LS. Left kidney measured 10.6cm LS
Both kidneys demonstrated diffuse increase in cortical echogenicity consistent with chronic parenchymal disease.
There is no evidence of calculi, unirary tract dilation or gross mass lesion.
3. Urinary Bladder
The Urinary bladder measured 135cc with a post-micturition residual volume of 5cc.
Normal bladder morphology.
What does this mean for me?

1. Please explain what "grossly normal" means.
2. Please give me your prognosis re the health of my kidneys
3. As per your "detailed response", I am a diabetic and also hypertensive. The ultrasound was requested by my physician because of "elevated creatine". Please give your professional view on the state of my prostate and kidneys. I would like a detailed response relative to the results of the ultrasound as previously submitted.

                                    Brief Answer:
Get your diabetes and hypertension under control
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Grossly normal means, that the prostate looks normal when you look through ultrasound. This is considered normal, if there is any difference in the gross look, then we consider biopsy.
As per your ultrasound report kidney's are compromised most probably because of your diabetes and hypertension.
The prostate is slightly enlarged and the post voidal residual urine is also not so muc. This doesn't require treatment if you are asymptomatic.
I would like to know your serum creatinine and blood urea levels to give a better comment.
Stay Healthy.

My last lab test showed my creatinine level as 1.6 and my urea level as 70.62.
Please explain what is meant by ; "asymptomatic".
Also what should I do and what medicine(s) would you recommend to treat the kidney problem?

                                    Brief Answer:
Get blood sugar and Bp under control
Detailed Answer:
Hi
The word asymptomatic signifies in your case any symptoms of prostate like Urgency, frequency or hesitancy of urine.
Now, i am concerned, as you have developed Kidney dysfunction. Make a note, that there is no medicine to treat kidney dysfunction.
You just need to keep the precipitating factors under control like your diabetes and hypertension and need to keep a watch on your kidney function tests.
You should take an opinion from your nephrologist for the same.
I hope it helps you.
If you have any further query, please ask me.
Stay healthy.
