What Does Tingling Sensation On The Fingertips Indicate?

default
Posted on Fri, 16 Dec 2016
Question: Hi. Are you there? I have tingling in my right hand finger tips. Not anywhere else. Any idea on the cause? I have had it now for about a week.

Concerning my tingling finger tips. I have no injury or damage that would have caused this. I have not been ill in any way. I do not have diabetes, nor high blood pressure.

Brief Answer:
Hi back.....yes, I'm here! :)

Detailed Answer:
Good evening. Thank you for your question.

If you've only had tingling in the fingertips of one single hand then, a very possible cause is entrapment of a nerve or nerves. If ALL the fingertips are tingling...then, you may be suffering problems from 2 different nerves (median and ulnar). If you can pay very close attention to EXACTLY which fingers are tingling and WHERE the fingers are tingling then, you may find that at most only 2 1/2 or perhaps 3 1/2 fingers are actually feeling funny in their tips. That could be easily explained by a median nerve type of entrapment although I can't explain why you're not complaining of tingling, numbness, and perhaps some pain in other parts of the hand....perhaps, if it's only started over the past week....it's just at the front end and other symptoms may become more apparent as time goes on. A good neurological examination by a neurologist along with an electrical study referred to as an EMG/NCV will possibly elucidate a problem though...if purely sensory at this point and if only 1 week in duration....the study may not show much......I might wait to see if the symptoms last at least 4-6 weeks then, send you for the study.

Another possibility to consider though less likely since it only involves ONE hand would be either a Vitamin B12, B6, Folic Acid, or Vitamin D deficiency. Any one of these deficits can be deduced through laboratory testing and then, appropriately addressed by replacement therapy or improving your diet to add foods that add plenty of whatever element is missing. In addition to those more commonly lower than normal labs I would also recommend checking your FREE T4 and TSH which are indicators of your thyroid gland's level of functioning. Again, I think it's slightly less likely that you have these chemical imbalances only because you're complaining of 1 hand. One would imagine that if it were a chemical or metabolic abnormality that the strange sensations would be present in BOTH hands....not just one....but I don't think it's wrong to send you for labs at the same time. Even if it turns out that you have low levels of these nutrient elements and that correction doesn't result in much or even any improvement.....there's never any down side to replenishing these elements if they are low.....kind of lot topping off your court with water and oil....will it always result in fixing that noise in the engien? Probably not....but there are many other benefits you can get which can be as important......so I'd run the lab tests and follow through with replenishment dictated by the numbers.

If I've adequately answered your questions could you do me a huge favor by CLOSING THE QUERY and being sure to include some fine words of feedback along with a 5 STAR rating if you feel my suggestions have helped?
