Posted on Tue, 28 Jul 2015
Question: I am a 57 year old male. I am not XXXXXXX and haven't had sex with anyone in several years. Several months ago an itchy ring developed around the foreskin of my penis. The ring has started to shrink to the point that I can no longer pull the foreskin over the head of the penis. My co offers the "call a dr" plan that I used. I was prescribed fluconazole 150 mg. I was shocked to learn this was vaginal yeast infection's for women. Are we on the right path here????

Brief Answer:
Fluconazole 150 mg is recommended for fungal infection and is acceptable

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX XXXXXXX
Thanks for writing in to us.

I have read through your query in detail.
Please find my observations below.

1. The medicine fluconazole 150 mg is given to treat fungal infections. Fungal infections might affect men and women. Vaginal yeast in women is also a fungal infection.

2. Fungal infections in the penis might appear as an itchy ring and this is called ring worm infection. This is a common condition seen in many adults. 150 mg fluconazole is the recommended treatment for such a condition. You might be having a severe form of the fungal infection and therefore suggested oral antifungal medicine.

3. In conclusion, your "call a doctor" plan prescription is acceptable, however if the symptoms persist even two weeks following the medication then I suggest a clinical examination.

Hope this answers your question. Please feel free to correct any oversight in my interpretation of your problems and discuss them in detail as per your requirements.

Hope your query is answered.
Do write back if you have any doubts.

Regards,
Dr.Vivek
