Brief Answer: Mostly in inflammatory and auto immune condition. Detailed Answer: Hello dear, Nice to meet you here, Prednisone is a synthetic steroid used in wide variety of conditions. They are usually used against inflammatory and auto immune conditions .[ other conditions like asthma, COPD, psoriatic arthritis, ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease, etc,. are also usually treated with prednisone.] I also came to know that you have psoriatic arthritis from your medical history. I would like to provide few advice to you regarding psoriasis treatment in my own interest, The aim in psoriatic arthritis treatment is to control inflammation, stop joint destruction, and maximize joint function. Skin symptoms as well as joint symptoms are usually treated at the same time. The initial treatment for psoriatic arthritis usually starts with Non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) [such as ibuprofen or naproxen. NSAIDs are excellent in providing long-term relief from the chronic pain and inflammation of psoriatic arthritis. Secondly, Prednisone is the steroid most commonly used to treat certain rheumatic diseases such as psoriatic arthritis. However, it's important for you to take steroids such as prednisone only when absolutely needed. So have a word with your treating physician before starting the Steroids. Hope helped your query, Kindly rate the answer if you are satisfied. Feel free to contact me again anytime for any further clarification Take care Regards, dr.surendiran gaj.

Thank you. I have to take 8 tabs a day for 2 weeks. Do i just stop? I always thought you had to stop steroids gradually. I am taking them for psoriatic arthritis. Will they reduce swelling in fingers and arms? Thank You

Brief Answer: Stop drugs gradually under physician guidence. Detailed Answer: Hello dear, Nice to meet you again, No, do not stop drugs all of sudden, it may create withdrawal reactions [numbness, burning sensation, etc.], so it is advised to stop the dose gradually. Try to consult your treating physician before stopping or tapering the dose of steroid, as he had a clear opinion on your condition through proper examination Yes, the steroids will reduce the swelling all over the body [including fingers and arms], through its anti-inflammatory effects. Hope helped you, Feel free to contact me again anytime for any further clarification Take care Regards dr.surendiran gaj.
