Question : What is a dilated and fluid-filled loops of small bowel and colon
I was told I would get the answer immediately
Brief Answer:
INTESTINAL OBSTRUCTION
Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Welcome to Ask a doctor.
I am Dr Ajeet XXXXXXX
Our intestines have smooth muscles which keep the ingested food moving forward by the peristaltic movements. During this ,the nutrients are absorbed and waste is excreted out via rectum and anus as fecal matter.
Whenever there is infection and obstruction of intestines, the peristaltic movements are compromised, the gut is not moving properly so in an attempt to do so,gut gets dilated and large amount of intestinal secretions are secreted. This gives a radiological picture of dilated and fluid filled gut loops.
As far as symptomatology is concerned, there will be nausea and vomiting due to non propulsion of food, progressive abdominal distention and patient will not pass flatus and stools.Patient may have dehydration due to poor oral intake and may slip into shock.
Hope that I have answered your query. If you have any doubts, please let me know.
Regards
