Brief Answer:
Bilateral hydronephrosis is abnormal filling up of both kidneys with urine.

Detailed Answer:
Hello Wlb and welcome to HCM.
As an Urologist, i can fully understand your concern.

Hydronephrosis, means abnormal filling up of the kidneys, with urine.
Urine drains from kidneys to bladder, through a tube called ureter.
Bilateral means, on both sides.

How did it happen, needs certain tests to find out the cause like,
1. Blood routine,creatinine,RBS,LFT, platelets,uric acid and PSA.
2. CECT( contrast CT-IVU).

Depending on the cause, treatment can be decided.
He'll need to get examined by an Urologist.
You may send the examination reports, with the lab and scan reports here, for an expert opinion.
Also, mention,if he's on any other medication.

Hope your doubts are cleared.
Wishing him well.

Brief Answer:
delay in doing the tests, will delay the treatment.

Detailed Answer:
Hello Wlb,
From the medication, i could make out his present treatment.

The medication doesn't give an idea of, possible causes for the hydronephrosis.
It's the tests i advised, that'll give a clue, to possible causes,of the problem.

Once we know the cause, then i can give you an idea of the treatment.
If we delay the treatment of hydronephrosis, the kidney function will gradually reduce.

Wishing him good health.

we do not know how long this has been this way. No problems was found on pet scan for a check for cancer. I did not show cancer anywhere, He is to have a dr go in with a camera to see what is happening next weel. Just wanted to here what could be told us at that time. Not that is absolute just what can happen in his case. In other words this problem can cause 1, 2, 3 problems now and in the future.

Brief Answer:
basic reports will be needed.

Detailed Answer:
Hello Wlb,

His basic reports including the scan done before PET scan, will be needed.
Only after seeing them, can an expert opinion be given.

Only a biopsy of any suspicious area, can diagnose a cancer.
No other test or scan can diagnose cancer.

Wish him well.

I thought that the Pet Scan would always show a cancer?

Answered by Dr. Matthew J. Mangat (22 minutes later)
Brief Answer:
PET scan alone, is not a confirmatory test for cancer.

Detailed Answer:
Hi Wlb,

PET scans are used to diagnose, possibility of some types of cancer and possible spread, of some other types of cancer.

A biopsy is the only test to confirm a cancer.

Send the original reports to know about his problem.

wish him well.

Brief Answer:
Bilateral hydronephrosis can damage the kidney function.

Detailed Answer:
Hello Wlb,

The basic tests done for your husband's problem, depend on his symptoms.
Unless you reveal why he went to the doctor, and what were the reports,it's difficult for anyone to reveal the possible diagnosis.

Now you're aware of, what is bilateral hydronephrosis.
Block of the urine flow from both kidneys towards bladder, isn't normal.
There must be some cause for it, which needs urgent treatment.

The basic tests done are to assess his kidney function, as it can be affected.
These are checked by doing his blood tests and a CT-IVU, or a MRU scan.
Subsequent tests are dependent on the findings of these reports.

With delay in clearing the block, the kidneys can get damaged, with lower function.
Depending on severity of block(hydronephrosis),it can also lead to infection.

So possibilities are so many.
Hope you're clear about gravity of the matter.
