Question: My doctor diagnosed me with illooband syndrome .. he has me doing massages on my Illio band using a foam roller.. he says I can still exercise at low tension..I do my elliptical everyday.. am I doing too much?? What is causing this tightness on that band.. it is hard to walk for a long period of time.. does. This indicate other inflammation in the body? Thanks so much!! Now that I have this will it be an ongoing problem?

Brief Answer:
It is a stress related overuse injury.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
Ilio band syndrome is an overuse injury that is common in endurance athletes like runners and bikers. It affects a tissue that runs from the side of your hip all of the way down past your knee.
There can be some inflammation in the area also. Proper rest is necessary for healing. You need to use elliptical only as long as it does not cause a pain in the area. Application of local muscle relaxant gel and a hot compress can also help. This will gradually heal with massage and as you decrease the stress on the area.
I hope this answers your query.

Does it affect the knee where it feels so stiff you can not straighten it out all the wAy??walking is a little stiff on that knee.. does a lot of massage help heal it faster? Can I use ice on the knee? He wanted me to use a roller and roll it up and down the band..I am not a strong athlete so I am surprised to get this!! Is it something I will have to worry about from now on?? Thanks so much .. you are amazing!! Is it very common?

Brief Answer:
Hot compress will help.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
It can affect the knee also and cause the stiffness. This can be related to a mild decrease in joint lubricants also. Taking supplements like Glucosamine or chondroitin can help.
Massage and a hot compress increases the blood flow in the area thus decreasing the inflammation.
This will subside with time. This is not likely to be a lifelong problem. This si commonly seen in athletes. No need to worry.
Hope my answer is helpful.

Brief Answer:
Can be due to fibrosis.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
The knot like things that you feel can be a local scar or fibrosis due to the injury. It will gradually soften up as the tissue regains its elasticity.
