Question: My girlfriend got a call from her doctor and said she has cervical dysplasia, but that they can test in another year or so, but she should be fine. Should I be concerned as a man?

Brief Answer:
You need to test for HPV infection.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for trusting us with your health concern.

Cervical dysplasia, a precancerous change in the lining cells of the cervix of the uterus is caused by HPV (human papillomavirus infection). Cervical dysplasia isn't cancer. It can range from mild to severe, depending on the appearance of the abnormal cells. Dysplasia could go away on its own or, rarely, it could develop into cancer.

HPV test and colposcopy are needed for proper diagnosis and an early treatment. If it is mild then no treatment is needed. She can have a normal sexual life and can bear children normally.
Pap and HPV testing is recommended after a year to monitor the condition and check for recurrences of dysplasia.

The male partner needs to have HPV test as some of its strains can be sexually transmitted leading to genital warts, condyloma and rarely carcinoma penis. Early treatment can cure the infection.

Brief Answer:
Not strictly an STD.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
HPV is transmitted by direct contact, usually sexual, with an infected person. Transmission occurs most frequently with sexual intercourse but can occur following nonpenetrative sexual activity also. It is not strictly an STD.
Hope my answer is helpful.

So is it important for me to get tested for HPV? Since the doctor told her it was a mild case of dysplasia did't know if that was a big deal. Let me know.

Even if it was a mild case of dysplasia even then the chances of transmission of HPV are there. It is best to get yourself tested so that you know your infection status.
