ESR is short form for Erythrocyte sedimentation rate. It is a non specific test which doesn't test for any particular disease.
In medical science we call this as Acute phase reactant. This means it increases in level as a reactions to any stress to the body. The stress could be Infection , Inflammation or trauma.
An elevation in ESR indicates that there is some problem in the body, but what it that problem is not told by ESR.
