What Is Happening If I Have Ringing In My Ears?

default
Posted on Fri, 20 Apr 2012
Question: Firstly for the past several weeks I have been having some serious ringing in my ears. Sometimes I think I can hear music or the tv on a low volume. Then on Wednesday I was awoken by this feeling of being dizzy or my head spinning. When I woke up and sat up my head was still spinning and feeling dizzy. I tried to walk and became unbalance with my walking. Today now, I am feel all this tingling crawling sensation in my legs. I have been suffering with chronic pains in the back of my left knee, and lower back. My right inner ankel I have had chronic pain for almost three years. X-rays showed there was nothing wrong. I did have a cortisone shot back in March which helped get rid of the pain in my ankle and back (my knee wasn't an issue then) But after walking down some escalators the pain is back in my ankle and my lower back on the left side. So now I am suffering with pain in the back of my knee, right ankle, and left side of back. Ringing ears, vertigo, and now crawling sensations along both legs. Can someone have so many complaints?

My age is incorrect. I am 52 in August. During the day I will have a slight feeling of being dizzy or light headed, but it only last for a minute or two. My pulse seems to be beating fast especially at night or after eating. I have had very light switching in my chest on the right hand side but nothing that lasts long or very painful or tight. I was thinking it is nothing, but now wondering if it is a small XXXXXXX of something happening to me.

Hello.

Thanks for writing to us.

The multiple problems that you are having seem to be due to two causes-

1. Ringing in ears, vertigo are indicative of middle ear disease- can be diagnosed on examination by an ENT specialist only. Anti vertigo drugs will help, but excessive ear wax and infection needs top be ruled out.

2.Pain in legs and crawling sensation in both the legs is mostly associated with a spinal cord problem like disc prolapse. You need to have an MRI of your dorso lumbar spine for diagnosis. You could get the test done through a spine surgeon/neurosurgeon.

Till the time you fix an appointment with your surgeon, you can follow some general measures for relief-
- If the pain is severe, you need bed rest till the pain resolves.
- Get some analgesics prescribed and apply analgesic spray or ointments.
- While resting, keep a pillow under your knees if it doesn't bother you.
- Avoid lifting heavy objects.
- back strengthening exercises and stretching exercises for your hamstrings daily as advised by a Physio.
- avoid exercises in times of pain.
- improvise your posture while sitting.

Hope I have solved your query. If not, I will be available for further follow up.

Wish you good health.

Regards.
