Dear XXXXXXX

Greetings from health care magic!!! I am Dr Thakker and shall be answering your question.

Serum creatinine is a marker of the kidney function. In chronic renal failure its levels rise as the kindey function worsens. There are no fixed levels above which dialysis should be taken. Commonly, creatinine levels above 5mg/dl need hemodialiysis.

However many parameters are taken into consideration while deciding if dialysis is to be given to the patient. These are:

1) urine output of the patient.

2) metabolic acidosis on arterial blood gas

3) hyperkalemia which is excessive potassium in blood

4) uremic features like hiccoughs / seizures.

Serum creatinine level alone is never used to just decide the need for dialysis.

I hope this helps you out. If you have any more questions, please do not hesitate to write back to me.

Yours sincerely,
Dr Thakker.
