What Is Serum Lithium Test For?

default
Posted on Thu, 9 Jul 2015
Question: Hi, just a query, I am not a bipolar patient, but I had some blood tests done the other day, in relation to my Hashimotos autoimmune disease. They were CRP, Iron Studies, Cholesterol, Blood Glucose etc. When I picked up my results I saw that my GP had ordered a Serum Lithium test which came back low at 0.2. Why would my GP even order this test if I am not taking any Lithium? He wants to see me non urgently. Thanks for looking.

Brief Answer:
probably in relation to thyroid check up

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for writing to us.

You are right that there is no indication of lithium testing until someone is prescribed lithium for bipolar disorder.

The best answer of your question can only be given by your physician only.

However considering positive history of hashimotos disease you are likely suffering from thyroid problem. Lithium also can cause thyroid problem. Otherwise I also do not find any specific indication if you do not have nay history of bipolar or lithium intake.

Please upload/write down your all reports including thyroid.

I will be happy to help further after checking your reports.

Dr.Chintan Solanki
