Question: What is the accuracy of a hiv rna test after 7 days?

Answered by Dr. Sunil Jangid (40 minutes later)
Brief Answer:
HIV RNA test after 7 days is quite reliable.

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXX,

Welcome to HCM.

HIV RNA test is for detection of viral load and itcan be detected in most patients after 7-14 days of the infection. In 95% of cases viral load is detectable between 3 days and 6 weeks. It can be considered reliable at 7 days but for more accurate result you can go for 4th generation test after 4 weeks. Hope this info will help you. For any further query ask me again and I am always here to help you.

Thank You

Another doctor told me it is just 50% reliable. Are there different types of hiv rna tests? Is that why there are these differences?
doctor
Answered by Dr. Sunil Jangid (15 minutes later)
Brief Answer:
The differences are just because of viral load.

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXX,

HIV viral load is usually very high within first four weeks of infection so HIV RNA test can be used to detect suspected early infection in someone who has symtoms but some people have undetectable viral load without treatment so negative result can not guarantee that you do not have the virus that is why its accuracy is different and questionable.

HIV RNA test is mainly used for babies born to HIV positive mothers. I also agree with another doctor that is why I had said it can be considered reliable but for more accurate result you have to go for 4th generation test which detects both antigen as well as antibody and highly reliable after 4 weeks.

Thank You

With no apparent symptoms is the reliability less then 95%? What is the probability of a false negative after 7 days?
doctor
Answered by Dr. Sunil Jangid (2 minutes later)
Brief Answer:
With no apparent symptoms the reliability is obviously less.

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXX,

If there are no related symptoms than the reliability is definitely less and there is the possibility of false negative result after 7 days so it is better to go for 4th generation test after 4 weeks of exposure.

Thank You

As you indelicated, I have done a 4th generation test close to 5 weeks. What is the reliability of this test?
doctor
Answered by Dr. Sunil Jangid (2 hours later)
Brief Answer:
The reliability at 5 weeks is around 90%.

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXXX,

Welcome back and thanks for follow-up.

The reliability of 4th generation test close to 5 weeks is around 90%. Don't worry because if the test is negative at 5 weeks then it is very very unlikely to get any changed result after 12 weeks so be relaxed and move ahead in life happily.

Having taken both tests rna at 1 week and Hiv 4th generation at 5 weeks, does does it increase the overall reliability? Should I take another rna test?
doctor
Answered by Dr. Sunil Jangid (4 minutes later)
Brief Answer:
Yes it will increase the reliability.

Detailed Answer:
Dear xxxxx,

If HIV RNA and 4th generation tests both are negative then it will surely increase the reliability. You can go for repeat testing after 3 months of exposure with HIV 4th generation test to get 100% reliable and conclusive result.

Could you please point me to some research on the measurable risk related these activities?
Receiving oral (not protected)
Giving anal fingering (not protected)

Is use of the condom risk free? Some research says is just 80% safe.
doctor
Answered by Dr. Sunil Jangid (57 minutes later)
Brief Answer:
Use of condom is always safe until broken.

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXXX,

Welcome back once again.

Recieving oral and giving anal fingering both not protected carries very less risk so don't worry.

Use of condom is always considered safe until it is broken during the activity. Don't get anxious as you are risk free. Always stay happy and healthy.

Unfortunately even if low the risk is present. I had small cuts on my fingers. Are there reported cases related to fingering?
Would you suggest to have another rna test?
doctor
Answered by Dr. Sunil Jangid (1 hour later)
Brief Answer:
I have not seen any such cases.

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXXX,

There are no such cases reported and I have also not seen any such case. As such no further test is required but still if you want then go for repeat test after 3 months as I had said earlier. It will give you 100% accurate and conclusive result.
