Question: My recent US screening result during my complete health check-up shows following:

Observation : ULTRASOUND WHOLE ABDOMEN Liver appears normal in size, shape and echopattern. No focal parenchymal lesions identified. No evidence of intra/extrahepatic biliary tree dilatation noted. Portal vein appears to be of normal size. Gall bladder moderately distended. No definite calculi identified. No evidence of abnormal wall thickening noted. Spleen appears normal in size, shape and echopattern. No focal parenchymal lesions identified. Pancreas appears normal in size, shape and echopattern. No definite calcification or ductal dilatation noted. Both kidneys shows
multiple ( > 10 in number) cortical cysts of varying sizes, largest measuring ~ 22 x 20 mm in right kidney upper pole and ~ 33 x 32 mm in left kidney mid pole. Few of the cysts show wall calcification. Mild increase in cortical echotexture noted in both kidney - features suggestive of acute polycystic kidney disease. Corticomedullary differentiation appears maintained. No evidence of calculi or hydronephrosis seen on either side. IVC, abdominal aorta and para aortic regions are normal. No significant lymphnode enlargement identified. Urinary bladder distended and appears normal. No evidence of abnormal wall thickening noted. Prostate appears normal in size. Normal echopattern
noted within the gland. No evidence of ascites or pleural effusion seen. IMPRESSION: Bilateral adult polycystic kidney disease. - Suggested clinical correlation. (Enclose reports) PS Dr. XXXXXXX XXXXXXX T REGISTRAR

Brief Answer:
hi

Detailed Answer:
Polycystic kidney disease is a genetically mediated kidney disease which runs in families. All the family emmbers would get affeceted by this at different ages. THough, it is seen in all in the affected family, not every one develop kidny damage.
ADPKD < popular known is seen in one among 2oo asypmtomatic population. It is decided before the birth. Many will be asymptomatic and some of them would develop some complications and few of them only would develop kidney damage
We need to assess you for the development of kidney disease based on the risk factors
1. Do u have high blood pressure?
2. Do you have diabetes
3. Do you smoke/ take alcohol
4. Any one in your family has kidney disease/ diabetes/ high BP/ a bleed in the brain
5. what is your body weight
6. did you get your lipid profile done at any time
7. Did you get any blood tests like serum creatinine done during this routine checkup
Mere presence of ADPKD , doesnt mean that you are going have damaged kidneys.

Brief Answer:
No specific treatment at the moment...

Detailed Answer:
As per the reports, you don't have many risk for the development of kidney damage though the kidney structure is altered. In ADPKD, the entire kidney is replaced by small cysts (fluid filled bubbles, where the kidney looks like a bunch of grapes) and slowly damages the kidney structure. It has two varieties and the second variety is less likely to progress and you appear to be having the second variety.

Those with high blood pressure requiring drug therapy, obese, smokers, with family history of kidney failure, abnormal lipid profile, associated diabetes are the people likely to develop kidney damage. So, now you understood what are all the risk factors for the development of damage to kidneys with this ADPKD. Try to follow a healthy life style and get annual health check up.
