Posted on Fri, 18 Jul 2014
Question: I have a urinary tract infection. It just started today. I have had MANY. I took my first dose of Nitrofurantin 100 mg (I think I took it but I am not positive.) I need to run to the ladies room every few minutes. Since I am not sure I took the Nitrofurantin, how long should I wait to take another. Sorry not to have paid more attention. Would you please let me know what you think. XXXX

Brief Answer:
Urine test and ultrasonography.

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for our query.
Read the history of recurrent Urinary Tract Infection.
Nitrofurantoin is to be taken twice a day.

The diagnosis and cause can be found by an ultrasonography and urine tests: routine, microscopy culture and sensitivity. This will help in giving the most proper antibiotic. One should know why are you getting recurrent UTIs. Sometimes IVP ( intravenous Pyeloraphy can give a proper diagnosis.

Take plenty of fluids orally. IT is observed that for the fear of going to bathroom so frequently one start taking less and less amount of fluids and water.

I think it would be advisable considering your age, and the difficulty of frequency of micturition you are facing to add an alkalinizer.
