Question: I just was advised of an abnormal pap smear. Doctor has called in a prescription for vaginal estrace and a recheck in 3 months. I'm 65 with a history of high blood pressure and high cholesterol. I am overweight. Should I use this prescription and what would it be treating? I am post menopausal.

Brief Answer:
vaginal estrace high risk deep venous thrombosis

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for contacting HCM with your medical concerns.

I am sorry to hear that you have had an abnormal pap smear. Since you are 65 years old I am concerned that you would be started on an estrogen product without properly informing you of its purpose and the risks associated with its use. I recommend that you contact your doctor and see if there are other options.

In my practice before I start women on estrogen I give them clear instructions as to their use and what the side effects could be. Estrogen can cause deep venous thrombosis and other blood clots. These blood clots are significant and could lead to severe consequences including pulmonary blood clots. It may also stimulate your breast tissue and cause breast tenderness. The estrogen will also stimulate your uterus which could restart your menstrual cycles.

The abnormal pap smear may be just atypical cells from lack of hormones. It could also be insufficient pap smear due to lack of hormones too. I recommend that you contact your doctor again to get better information and the reason for the hormone.
