What Is The Difference Between Glycomet And Glycomet SR?

Question: Diabetology
i had Type 2 diabetes since 2011. Eversince i used to take glycomet 250 mg twice a day and later on my doctor asked me to take glycomet 500 mg after dinner, and 250 mg after breakfast , when i said that my fasting levels from the begining are high and oscillates between 110 to 125 and my pp levels are always below 150 .I am using 500 mg during night and 250 mg as usual after breakfast since last year. One of my friends has told me that he was taking same glycomet 500 mg SR and his glucose levels are normal. He wanted me to try. Hence this question.
My question is what is the difference between glycomet plain and glycomet SR. If i take glycomet 500 mg SR after dinner, does this help to contain the glucose levels in fasting to 100 instead of 110 to 120. Alternatively do i have to take glycomet 500 mg SR twice a day then does this help to be in the normal levels. Kindly advise

Brief Answer:
SR represents Sustained release. The drug action is extened to 24hrs

Detailed Answer:
Hi Sir, welcome to HCM.
Gone through your query.

Glycomet SR means its a sustained or extended release of drug where the action is for about 24 hrs. and what you are using is for 12 hrs.

Usually SR tablet in diabetics is prescribed when only one tablet a day is used. when the dose is twice a day, normal tablets are prescribed.

In you case, PP levels are under absolute control and even Fasting are not too high. First need not worry much. Try to take less calories during night. And as you've asked, you can definitely try Glycomet 500 SR at night and 250 in the morning.

That change may show the required change in sugar levels.

You need not go for 500 twice a day as of now. If the above change doesn't lower sugar levels even after 20 days, then you can change the dosage to 500 mg twice a day.

Hope this will help you. Any further queries are welcome..
Thank you
