It encompasses several diseases including infections and autoimmune disorders. Ulcerative colitis is a specific type on inflammatory bowel disease or autoimmune disorder that manifests with bloody diarrhea. The diagnosis is made by biopsies of the colon. This is treated with steroid, oral medications and sometimes with biological agents like Humira. Ulcerative colitis is a life long condition and will have periods of exacerbations which can be very debilitating.

To make the diagnosis of ulcerative colitis you need a colonoscopy and a biopsy of the lining of the colon. Without that you are making only a presumptive diagnoses. Once the diagnosis is made there are several medications available. It can be controlled but she will need to see a gastroenterologist to tailor her medications for her disease
