Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX
Thanks for writing to us. I can understand your concern.
Schizophrenia is rare (almost 1% prevalence) psychiatric illness but it is one of the severe illnesses. Very few patients can live stable life. If your diagnosis was right and you are settled now, you are very lucky. Though you do not have any symptom at present, it may appear again in absence of medicines. I appreciate that you are doing Phd.
In general olanzapine is an atypical antipsychotic and seranace (haloperidol) is a typical anti psychotic medicine and both are used in treatment of schizophrenia. Whenever there is history of 3 episodes of illness or more than 3 years continuous illness better to continue medicines for lifelong to prevent relapse. It is recommended protocol all over the world. Of course dose and quantity of the medicines must be reduced. 2.5 mg olanzapine and 5 mg haloperidol are the lowest possible dose. Later on you can take only olanzapine.
The important side effects of olanzapine are weight gain and glucose tolerance and with 2.5 mg dose it is XXXXXXX likely and these can be prevented with healthy lifestyle.
With medicines you can go to Germany after your doctor's recommendation that you are fit for the same.
Hope I have answered your query, I will be happy to help further.
Regards,
Dr.Chintan Solanki.
