Question : My son was given prednisolone 15mg/5ml. The directions state take 4 teaspoons daily for 5 days. He was having an asthma exacerbation.
In my experience prednisone should be tapered, and also that dose of 60mg seems high for a 15 year old.
Just looking for an opinion

Brief Answer:
What is his weight?

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your question on Health Care Magic.
I can understand your concern.
Yes, prednisone (oral steroid) must be given cautiously and in tapering dose in asthma exacerbation.
Ideally this should be started as 1mg/kg dose for 5 days and than gradually taper over 15-20 days.
So please let me know the weight of your son, so that I can guide you better.
I will be happy to help you further.
Wish you good health. Thanks.

My son is approx 150-155lbs
In the past they would prescribe something over the course of 5 days and every 2 days it would be lowered about 10mg until we ended up doing a day of 10mg then D/C I found this strange that with such a high dose they did not suggest a taper

Brief Answer:
Dose is appropriate for his weight.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your follow up question on Health Care Magic.
I can understand your concern.
His weight is around 68 in kilograms (kg).
So his steroid dose is appropriate for his weight.
After 5 days taper it down to 3tsf for 5 than.
Than 2 tsf for 5 days and lastly 1tsf for 5 days.
Hope I have solved your query.
