Question : Hi, Dr. Spaho. Just a quick question. The AO on the right side has worsened and all I have tried is not helping much. The meds, etc. I am thinking about making an appt with a neurosurgeon who may want to try a procedure - such as gamma knife and I guess there are others. Two part question - are the risks high with this and also, what is the general success rate of reducing AO symptoms with one of these procedures? Thanks, doctor.

Brief Answer:
I think gamma knife surgery is a good option.

Detailed Answer:
Hello again, and thanks for the direct question.

I have read your question about trying the gamma-knife procedure for the atypical neuralgia.

In my opinion, it is a procedure worth trying because it is used often for trigeminal neuralgia with a success rate of around 80% in relieving significant symptoms. with no or minor risks.

It uses concentrated radiation with no effects on other structures.

The main adverse effect is reported to be new facial sensory symptoms caused by partial nerve injury.

I hope this helps.
