Question: Hi;
I'm 70 years old had a complete hysterotomy… at 50 and took hrt treatment for years. Now I have night sweats. the doctors giving me premarin .06....?not sure of the amount. It's still a problem but not so bad after the premarin. What is the highest dosage a person should take. I do feel much better after starting the treatment....life would be a lot worse without it.

I have been through the cancer and heart problems and made it. So what do you thinks about the treatment I started In 2002 now they say it's not good for women. My life would be filled with pain from nerve problems and depression with out hrt. What is really a safe and positive treatment.

Thanks

Brief Answer:
Long-term use of HRT can be dangerous.

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

Premarin is a conjugated estrogen. Probably you are using tablets of 0.625 mg. Regarding your first question, I can say that for menopausal symptoms this is the maximum doses.
You should not increase the dosage more than 1 tab/day.
The recommendations are to use the min doses that control or ease the vaso-vagal symptoms(like the sweating as an example)

About the long-term use of HRT, you should know that this can be dangerous.
HRT can increase the risks for some types of malignancies, blood clots in the brain, heart attacks, and dementia.
This therapy should be used only for a certain period of time.

In this circumstances, if you were my patient, I will recommend trying (at least for some time) some non-hormonal strategies that are helpful for menopausal symptoms.

I agree with your treating doctor's opinion.
It is necessary to discuss other potential treating strategies that can be helpful for your symptoms.

Hope I have clarified your doubts. Wish you good health.

Regards
