What Is The Ideal TSH Level In A Pregnant Woman?

default
Posted on Mon, 10 Aug 2015
Question: Hello Doctor,

I had question regarding TSH level of a pregnant women. When my wife was 5 weeks pregnant I had her blood test done, where her TSH value was found 4.1 (report attached in the query). After consulting a doctor (GYN) she suggested that TSH in pregnancy should be low so she gave her medicines (Thyronorm 12.5 mcg) to get her TSH level down.
Now my wife is 12 weeks pregnant and she still is on that medicines. I have few doctors in my relation (not in GYN dept) who were not sure if my wife should be having medicines for her current TSH level. So I got confused whether my doctor advised us correctly on the TSH value.
I have my wifes blood test pending and will be doing it on coming Wednesday.
Can you please guide if my wife is on right medicine for her TSH value.

Thanks
doctor

Brief Answer:
Yes, your wife on right medication.

Detailed Answer:
Hello Sir,
Thanks for trusting hcm about your wife health care.
Congratulations on your pregnancy!
I have gone through your wife blood report and her TSH value are high( it means she is having hypothyroidism).
During pregnancy thyroid hormones plays a very important role in neurological development of your baby so she should maintain her thyroid level.
Requirement of thyroid hormone changes during pregnancy so she should repeat her thyroid profile in 2-3 months according to her report and drug should be adjusted accordingly.
Your doctor gave right medicine to her and she should continue it and there is no harm to your baby because of the medication.
Hope found useful, feel free to discuss more information.
Good luck.
Regards
