Posted on Fri, 17 Oct 2014
Question: Hi,
It's been almost 3 years now I am married. Me and my husband now want a child. But my weight is 84 kgs (height 5'-5'') and husband's is 110 kgs. Just wanted to know what is the ideal body weight for me to conceive. Should I reduce my weight further. And if we have to take a baby now then what precautions should I take to prevent any injuries to my spine/body.

Brief Answer:
Ideal weight and necessary advise given.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thanks for your query.

I have gone through your query in detail and have calculated your ideal body weight using standard medical formula. So, here are the conclusions:

First of all, I would like to let you know that your weight is definitely excessive. BMI (Body Mass Index) is a widely accepted formula which is used to assess whether a person's weight for height is appropriate or not.

Your height: 162.5 cm (5' 5")
Your weight: 84 kg
Your BMI works out to 31.8, which indicates that you are Obese.

To help you geta better idea, I have mentioned below the WHO(World Health Organisation) - BMI classification:
18.5 to 24.99 Normal Weight
25 to 29.99 Overweight
30 or more Obesity

Using another standard medical formula to calculate your IDEAL WEIGHT, I have calculate your ideal body weight for your age and height to be 57kg. But you should remember that this is just the "ideal" or "perfect" weight.

Practically speaking, for your age and height, a "healthy" weight should be less than 68kg. So, you should lose atleast 16kg in order to reach your healthy body weight.

Regarding your other question about protecting your spine / body, I would suggest the following things:
1) You need regular physical exercise to keep your body fit and prevent any injuries due to overweight. I would advise aerobic exercises like cycling, jogging, swimming, etc.
2) You need to do regular back / spine-strengthening exercises.
3) You should avoid excessive strain on your spine by correcting your posture and avoid lifting heavy weights.
4) You should follow strict diet - which should include only nutritious food and avoid unhealthy and junk foods.
5) You should include adequate amounts of calcium in your diet so that your bones are healthy and strong. So, taking calcium-rich foods like milk, ragi, green leafy vegetables, etc.

I hope that you will benefit from my advise and take the necessary steps to reduce your weight and maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Best wishes.
