What Is The Ideal Dosage For Nortriptyline Taken For Stomach Problem?

default
Posted on Tue, 12 Apr 2016
Question: Dear doc - for my stomach problem since it is still bothersome, what can I take along with mirtaz and oleanz? Will noryryptyline help relieve my stomach issues, if yes, what dose can I add of noryryptyline and at what dose? I am asking because a doc friend of mine suggested this. If noryryptyline, what else can I add? And since I get weird dreams continue, was wondering if reducing mirtaz to 15 from 18.75 will help. I personally feel something needs to be added to take care of my stomach. Pls advice.

Brief Answer:
Many other options are available.

Detailed Answer:
Hello again and thanks for asking again

Currently you are on Miraz and Oleanz and stomach problems are still persisting. In such case one option is to take Libratax (Clinidium bromide and Chlordiazepoxide combination) on SOS basis. This would result in improvement of symptoms of stomach cramping and altered bowel habits.

Other option is to give try to Fluoxetine and Olanzapine dose combination. It is available with some companies and addition of Olanzapine reduces the gastric side effects of Fluoxetine. This combination is better tolerated as compared to either of these drugs alone.

One more option is to start change the drugs. Vilazodone is a newer drug which has actions similar to SSRIs but has quick onset and usually results in symptomatic improvement from very first week of therapy. The drug is also better tolerated when compared to SSRIs. The gastric tolerability is also good.

Nortriptyline will increase constipation and might increase gastric side effects. I don't think adding the drug will result in better outcome.

If the dreams are still continuing then yes you can reduce the dose of drug.

You can discuss with your doctor for either of these options. Please give some times to drugs to result in improvement. I know its difficult but you have to bear it.

Thanks.

Brief Answer:
Mebeverin is better option

Detailed Answer:
Hi thanks for asking again

Colospa retard is Mebeverin and the drug is a good drug for IBS symptoms and help to reduce the cramps in IBS. Though the drug is known to result in relaxation of gut muscles thus might cause constipation still it is one of useful drug for IBS. You can give this drug a try and this should help you. Cyclopam is also a drug which reduces the bowel motility. You can think of this drug also but in my opinion out of these two drugs Mebeverin is better for IBS symptoms.

Thanks.

Thank you doctor. What dosage of colospa I should take and how many times, before meals or after meals? There is clopspa retard also, is that better than normal colospa? If colospa retard, then how many times, before or after meals!

Brief Answer:
The drug should be taken before meals twice a day.

Detailed Answer:
Hello again

Yes Colospa retard is better than normal plain Colospa. Normally the doses of 200 mg twice a day should be be taken about half hour before meals. This should help in control of your symptoms. Take the drugs as per prescription only.

Thanks

My doctor today made mirtaz 15 from 18.75 and kept olimelt 2.5, both at night. She feels my dreams are coz of mirtaz and reduction in dosage should help me with my dreams. Hope it does not bring back my anxiety and help me sleep better.she asked to take colospa plain 135 in the morning, just one dose a day, is it OK if I take colospa retard twice a day before meals? Also have read that colospa can give constipation and upset stomach, how true is that? How about buscan for IBS, does it help? Sorry I am bothering you with too many questions!

Brief Answer:
Yes you can go with twice dosing

Detailed Answer:
Hello again

Yes you can take Colospa twice a day. The drug relaxes gut muscles thus might cause constipation. You can take the drug without worries as at this dose constipation will not be seen.

Buscopan is used mainly for pain and has not much roles in IBS. I usually prefer Libratax for IBS.

Thanks, still have doubts please ask again.
