What Is The Incubation Period Of Rabies Infection?

default
Posted on Tue, 12 Jul 2016
Question: In 2001/2002 two dog had bitten me little bit but at that time i have not taken vaccine, later after 6-7years i got tention and i took 3 anti rabies vaccine in 2008.

Details:
2008-3 vaccine
2010-3 vaccine
2011-4 vaccine(aug3+sep1)
2012-2 vaccine
*2016-5 vaccine

But the vaccine of 2008 a pharmacist used to bring the vaccine from 6-7km far away and used to inject me in my home,so their was delay of About 1hr after taking out of freeze. So i think it as useless.

Secondly i dont remember correctly that i have taken vaccine in 2010,i am not sure because i forgot now.

But i am 100% confident about the vaccine of 2011 and 2012.
and currently i am taking 5 vaccine of rabies Abhay rab due to bat exposure.

So my question is-

(i)Can i get rabies due to the dog bite in 2001/2002??

I have not taken vaccine at that time but later after 6/7 years and till now i have taken many vaccine,So will it protect me??I have read in net that before the development of symptoms if we take vaccine then we are safe.
I am very confused and worry about negri body..One microbilogy doctor said that if i have developed negri body then my later vaccines will not work..
But sir if i would have developed negri body then i would have got rabies and symptoms till now because of 2001-2002 dog bite, but i have taken vaccine before the development of symptoms na sir?

(ii)Currently i am taking 5course of rabies vaccine due to Bat issue so can in get any harmful reaction or neuro system problem or Guillian Barre syndrome? If yes then after how many days?

(iii)After completing the vaccine course can i do any test to know about the reactions in my body??

(iv)I also want to do rabies test,so is their any rabies test just like malaria hiv etc test???

(v)If i found in the test that i have rabies virus in my body then can i will be 100% cure??

Sir please help me reagrding all these questions,i am unable to live a peacefull life due to all these problems. My life has become dark i have lost all the happiness.
I am very afraid of the dog bite in 2001-2002..Please help me

Brief Answer:
Rabies Vaccination

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for your query. I can understand your concerns.

i)The incubation period of rabies (defined as the interval between exposure and the onset of clinical disease) is usually 20–90 days but in rare cases is as short as a few days or >1 year.Maximum period is 7 years documented. Hence getting rabies in 2016 i.e 14 years after dog bite in 2001/2002 is ruled out.

ii) You have started taking anti-rabies vaccine with Abhay rab following Bat exposure and it will give you full protection against rabies. Abhay rab is purified Inactivated Rabies Vaccine prepared on Vero cells. This vaccine prpared on continuous cell lines (Vero cells) are satisfactory and is highly immunogenic and remarkably safe compared with earlier vaccines. Serious neuroparalytic complications , including postinfectious encephalomyelitis and Guillain-Barré syndrome are very rare. Approximately 70% of cases of GBS occur 1–3 weeks after Older-type rabies vaccine, prepared in nervous system tissue.

iii)Neutralizing antibody may be detectable as early as 7 days after the start of primary immunization.Titers should be measured 2–4 weeks after immunization .An antibody level above 0.5 IU/ml indicates immunity.

iv)Detection of rabies virus RNA by RT-PCR is highly sensitive and specific. This technique can detect virus in fresh saliva samples, skin.

V) Rabies is universally fatal. There are only seven well-documented cases of survival from rabies. All but one of these patients had received rabies vaccine before disease onset. The single survivor who had not received vaccine had neutralizing antibodies to rabies virus in serum and CSF at clinical presentation.

Most patients with rabies die within several days of the onset of illness, despite aggressive care in a critical care unit.

Overall I find that you are well-protected and there is no scope of Rabies.

Sir one doctor has said that if i have developed negri body in my brain then i may get rabies in future due to the dog bite in 2001-2002.

Sir after bitten by rabid animal what is the duration of developing Negri body in the brain?
If i have developed negri body then i would have died years ago is it sir?

I have read in net that if any one takes vaccine during the incubation period then he is safe,no matter how late it is..but one should take vaccine before the development of symptoms.
So in my case i have taken vaccine before the development of symptoms i.e before development of Negri body??so i safe na sir??
Once the virus enters the brain then symptoms comes in 2-3 days,So though i have taken vaccine lately but i have taken before the virus would have entered my brain??Thats why i am safe?If the virus would have entered in my brain means negri body developed then i would have dead earlier..

Sir kindly help me and read my whole case-

In 2001/2002 two dog had bitten me little bit but at that time i have not taken vaccine, later after 6-7years i got tention and i took 3 anti rabies vaccine in 2008.

Q-So can i get Rabies in future sir due to the dog bite in 2001-2002??
Will the later vaccines will protect me?
Is their negri body in my brain??

After development of negri body that means the virus reaches to brain,Symptoms and rabies occurs immediately in 2-3days is it sir?
So that means i dont have negri body and also i have taken vaccine before the development of symptoms and negri body is it sir??

Sir please help me i am unable to live peacefully..i will die in tention and worry..my heart beat is increasing

Brief Answer:
Rabies vaccination

Detailed Answer:
I have already answered to all your queries serially as placed by you.

Negri bodies are eosinophilic cytoplasmic inclusions in brain neurons that are composed of rabies virus proteins and viral RNA. Negri bodies are detected in brain biopsy carried out after death on post-mortem. It is not possible to detect Negri bodies ante-mortem i.e before death occurs in Rabies. Negri bodies are not observed in all cases of rabies. You cannot remain alive with Negri bodies in your brain.
You are unnecessarily worried abut rabies and negri bodies etc.
Present course of vaccination will protect you against Rabies.
You are having some kind of phobia arising out of undue concern for developing rabies. In some people, this fear of contracting rabies can be practically debilitating.
You need to get out of the phobia of Rabies.

Q-My dear Sir you are sure na i will not get rabies in future due to the dog bite in 2001-2002??
Q-Ans sir as you said i understand that if their was negri body in my Brain then today i will not be alive is it sir??

Q-That means their is no negri body in my Brain??
Q-Sir does negri body remain silent in the brain for many years and attacks later??
I have read in net that when the virus reaches to brain then symptoms comes immediately n rabies occurs so in my case the virus doesnt reached my brain and so no negri body formed and also i have taken vaccine before the developments of symptoms though their was late in vaccine.

Brief Answer:
Rabies vaccination

Detailed Answer:
The antibody response to rabies vaccine is so predictable that routine measurement of serum neutralizing antibody titers is not required, unless there is immuno-suppression ( HIV infection, taking glucocorticoids or cytotoxic drugs/anti-cancer drugs).Titers should be measured 2–4 weeks after immunization in immunocompromised persons only.
I presume you are not in any kind of immuno-suppressed state. Hence test for antibody of rabies after vaccination is not recommended.

Brief Answer:
Rabies vaccination

Detailed Answer:
Most of your questions regarding rabies vaccination has already been answered.
There is nothing new to add.

You have already taken 6 vaccines in 2011-12.That have already given you some amount of protection against rabies. However cold chain should be maintained to preserve potency of Vaccine. Now that you have been exposed to bat ,you are again on anti-rabies vaccination. That will only boost your immunity and confer 100% immunity against rabies.
However,if you are still worried about rabies, you can go for Serum neutralizing antibody titre after completion of present vaccination course. That will allay your anxiety. An antibody level above 0.5 IU/ml indicates immunity. Serum neutralizing antibody titre against rabies is not done by all laboratories. National Institute of Virology XXXXXXX is the only centre.

Brief Answer:
Rabies vaccination

Detailed Answer:
Rabies due to dog bite in 2001-2002 is to occur by 2009 (Maximum incubation period i.e the interval between exposure and the onset of clinical disease is 7 years)

Only way to prove presence of Negri body in brain is to euthanize the animal and subject brain to histo-pathological examination. You cannot euthanize a human being for demonstration of Negri body in brain.
