default
Posted on Tue, 20 Sep 2016
Question: I am 29 week pregnant. I keep on checking my blood sugar for gestation diabetes.
Can you please specify me the normal sugar range in fasting and 2 hrs after meal. I tried to google but different sites have different range.
I tried this week and it is 98 while fasting and 139 after 2 hrs of lunch.
Is it ok?
Can you suggest me some meal plan.
I am non veg

Yes before pregnancy i was prediabetic. I was on metformin. But during pregnancy i had many fasting and pp test but my sugar was on control. After 12 week of pregnancy my doctor asked me to stop medication as my sugar was on control.
Last week i had gestation diabetic test and it came to be 157.so i was keeping track of my sugar at home
i do avoid sugar and sweet.
I generally have roti on breakfast and dinner and rice on lunch with dal, sabzi/chicken.
And i try to take fruits in between and milk at night

Detailed Answer:
Hello.

From the query I gather that you were a prediabetic who has been off medicines and the Gestational diabetic test has come out 157. I need to know whether that sugar was tested at 1 hour or 2 hour interval. The normal expected range varies as per time.

As for the diet, the following should help you-

1. continue taking flat breads/rotis for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
2. avoid rice and red meat as far as possible. They increase the sugar much more than the normal foods. Fish and chicken may be accepted in small quantities.
3. Fruits are okay, however make sure that you don't take fruits with high sugars or citric fruits like bananas, mangoes and oranges should be avoided.
4. Curds are a very good option.
5. Avoid sugar and sweet items. Avoid foods that are known to raise sugars suddenly eg. cornflakes, corn syrups etc. These are commonly known as high glycemic index foods.
6. A regular walk at a gentle pace that is comfortable to you may also help you control the sugars without medicines to some extent (please consult your gynecologist before starting walks actively).

I hope that the information helps you.
Best of luck,
Dr Saumya
