What Is The Prognosis Of An Early-stage Melanoma?

Question : I had 2 moles removed for biopsy. One was suspected for melanoma and other basal cell carcinoma. The test results are taking longer than expected which means they must be doing additional staining. Does that mean they found something in original stain? Can it still just be benign, precancer or melanoma in situ? Why additional staining?
