Posted on Mon, 4 May 2015
Question: What is the recovery period after a laser lithotripsy for a kidney stone? I'm a long distance runner and need to train. I'm really slow (12-17 minute miles), but am worried about loss of training time.

1) any blood in urine after procedure? - I am trying to plan ahead for scheduling the lithotripsy. I have no pain now and they want to do the procedure to avoid having a fairly large stone try to pass later.

2) what was the size of stone? 5 mm, will probably be bigger by time of procedure in a few weeks, but not much

3) any pain present? currently not in pain, doing this as preventive to avoid having the stone try to pass later

4) when is your follow up visit? we haven't scheduled the procedure yet and will schedule the follow up at that time

5) have your complaints got better after procedure? no complaints, preventive

6) are you drinking enough water? I never drink enough water, but I try

7) got ultrasound abdomen after procedure? there will likely be a follow on CT scan, I'm not sure about ultrasound

Brief Answer:
15 days it usually takes

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

thanks for writing back,

i apologize your question didn't specifically show if you are pre.. or post..procedure..

Well lithotripsy is a great treatment modality and really helpful..

It is indeed better if you can get it done as soon as possible because after stone goes abive 1cm it will be hard to remove it without surgery and surgery will keep you away from training for years..

Usually results of litho are really good and XXXXXXX activity if patient starts in a week or so..

Your training in my opinion will be able to be resumed in about 15 days after procedure but that dopends on you post procedure progress.

Usually progress is good and it takes just a couple of weeks for a person to get back to normal.

I wish you the very best of health.

Regards.

Dr.Muhammad Ahmad.
