What Is The Success Rate Of Surgery For Spinal Stenosis?

Posted on Tue, 31 May 2016
Question: Hello. I am trying to find info on stenosis. I have been told by my Dr, I have canal stenosis and also in my pelvic area feeding both legs. My leg pain is getting unbearable and would like to know my options. He has been telling me about an inplant unit that gives electrical pulses which works with a remote control. I am not much on that idea as I have heard many bad stories from it. My Dr. also said this does not fix the problem, it only helps to mask the pain. Is surgery an option and what is the success rate and also recovery time. thank you very much for any help you can provide. XXXXXXX XXXXX

Brief Answer:
surgery is best option

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I have studied your case.Canal stenosis is a condition in which there is compression in the spinal canal. It can be due to bony pressure or disc herniation. Your doctor has suggested you to go with Pulse electromagnatic stimulation. This is not a good option as it will not going to cure nerve compression. It is not effective in pain in all the cases. So I would suggest you to go with surgery. In this surgery we make a window in spinal canal, that allows nerve to relax.
It will give you good pain relief. You can start walking after one day and there is no bed rest needed. You can go ahead with this option. This will give you good pain relief in pelvic and leg pain. You will be able to walk long distance with out sitting in between.
I hope this answer will be useful for you.Let me know if there is any other followup questions.

Thank you for your quick response. I have been told the surgery can be troublesome with a lengthy recovery. In the answer you gave me it sounds to be not so bad. Is this a micro surgery or is there a larger cut involved ? I am needing to get some relief as it is getting worse by the day to the point my legs give out more and more regular. The pain seems to worsen when I lay down out night and many times have to get up and walk around a bit. Is this normal for this condition ? Thanks again for your advice. XXXXXXX XXXX

Brief Answer:
surgery can be done through micro incision

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Spine surgeon can do your surgery by small micro incision but that depends on your severity of compression. If you can send me your MRI then I can tell you if you will need a big incision.
This surgery will take care of pain that occurs during walking. Rest pain can be there for some time.
thanks
