Question: I am scheduled for routine colonoscopy in July, and am beyond terrified of the prep for it. Just wondering if anything, aside from just doing it will make it less traumatic for me?

Brief Answer:
Use an anxiolytic such as Diazepam 1 hour before colonoscopy.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for the query.

Firstly would like to assure you that preparation of colonoscopy only requires an overnight fasting and you have to take polyethylene glycol electrolyte solution as guided on the packet after which you would pass watery stools. The aim of all this is to clear up your bowel so that camera on the scope can get a clear picture.

However, if you feel terrified ask your doctor to give you 1mg of short-acting benzodiazepine called Diazepam to curb your anxiety.

This will make you a bit relaxed and drowsy and things would be over easily.

Thank you.
