What Kind Of Work Should Be Avoided During Pregnancy?

default
Posted on Thu, 20 Aug 2015
Question: Dear Dr XXXXXXX XXXXXXX
Thank you for your answer.
Further questions are
1)I am surprised that sweeping the floor is considered heavy work. Can you please give me some guidelines as to what is considered heavy work which I should avoid till I am 16 weeks pregnant.
2) I wonder if it is known whether subchorionic haematomas can recur once they have been resolved as in my case.
3) You initially advised against sexual intercourse for 12 weeks but the latest correspondence mentions 16 weeks as the placenta would have taken over more fully then. Is the actual intercourse or the arousal /emotional state that would pose a risk?
Thanks
doctor

Brief Answer:
Abstinence till 16 weeks

Detailed Answer:
Hello mam, good to hear that all is well and you have resumed your duties now.
Heavy work is anything which tires you and put pelvic pressure and thus weight lifting (bucket of water), sweeping the floor, brisk walking, full stairs in single flight and even rigorous intercourse.
Normal intercourse in slow fashion is usually alright but in your case still avoid it till 16 weeks because you had hematomas which have just resolved and thus your placenta still needs time for proper attachment and penetration into uterine musculature.
The hematomas have resolved and they usually don't come up again unless there is fresh insult in the form of trauma from outside or improper attachment already.
I initially advised modified bed rest and abstinence till 12 weeks to see the response to rest and in our last discussion I asked for resumption of routine activities but abstinence till 16 weeks so as to give your placenta full chance to get properly implanted.
By intercourse I mean Penetration of vagina but there is no problem in foreplay and sexual arousal at all.
Penetration of vagina by penis or fingers can cause stimulation of cervix and thus may initiate uterine contractions which can again precipitate hematomas.
I hope I have clarified all the points but in case you have any questions further, I will be glad to answer.
Wish you all the best.
