Question : I have suffered from situational and clinical depression for many years. I have taken Prozac and Paxil. I did not like the side effects of either. I have fought being put on antidepressants; but, my clinical depression has become more severe and I feel that medication is necessary to control it. I know there are newer medications now available. What do you suggest with the least side effects, such as weight gain, headaches, etc? I have gained weight and had other unpleasant side effects every time I take anti-depressants.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you.

Venlafaxine or Escitalopram will be suitable alternatives

Hello,

As per your requirement, newer antidepressant called Venlafaxine will be useful, so as Escitalopram.

Both are largely devoid of side effects and are considered safe in elderly age group.

Please check with your psychiatrist if he shares my view and if can prescribe these medications to improve your symptoms.
