Goal of treatment in COPD should be to reduce airway inflammation and bronchospasm. Also to reduce airway resistance and improve gas exchange.
Anticholinergic agents like ipratropium bromide are first line and are often used in combination with beta 2 agonists such as albuterol in COPD.
Home oxygen in hypoxemic patients and smoking cessation are the only modalities that reduce mortality in patients with COPD.
Pneumococcal and influenza vaccination should be done.
