What Should I Do About Recurrent Episodes Of Nausea, Bloating, Distended Stomach And Terrible Stomach Pain?

Question: I have had 2 colonoscopy and both show a stenosis in the ascending colon. Over the past 2 years I’ve had increasing “episodes” of nausea, bloating, distended stomach, and horrible stomach pain. At times I’m unable to pass gas’s or even burp. This is all usually followed by hours of throwing up a greenish bile looking liquid....never any food. Recently after these episodes I have diarrhea. My GI Dr thinks it’s Crohns and wants me to start on Asacol HD, 800mg, but I’ve read about this drug and I think it’s sulfa based. I’m horribly allergic to Septra and have a history of kidney disease, Brights specifically. I’m not sure what to do. I don’t have all the symptoms of Crohn’s but some of them. What should I do?

Brief Answer:
There are alternatives to asacol HD

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for the question.
My suspicion after reading through the question was the same as your GI doctor. I could think of crohns or Ulcerative colitis. Both of them can be managed well if not completely treated. However it has to be confirmed with colonoscopy and biopsy. Was Barium enema done? Were these tests done? First insist on getting a proper diagnosis before jumping to Asacol HD. This way your doubt about Crohns would be cleared.
Second, do not worry about sulfa drug allergies and Asacol HD. There are alternatives though it is the first drug to be cheap and readily available. You can say to your doctor about allergies and kidney disease, he might as well go with other biologicals or corticosteroids in mild to moderate disease. Besides B12 Shot (1cc/mo) / Multivitamin / Vitamin D (1000iu) / Calcium (1200mg) / Omega 3 Fish Oil (4800mg) also help. If it is a confirmed Crohns disease I strongly recommend CBT (Cognitive behavioural therapy) for all patients.
Hope my answer gives you a food for thought.
