Question : hi, I’m a 19 year old woman and I’m currently experiencing terrible period cramps. i started my period yesterday afternoon and i typically experience cramping for the first 2-3 days, typically at a pain level where i need to be constantly medicated with extra strength advil to function normally. Today, I took one extra strength (400mg) advil when i woke up at 10, and then another at 4 when the first wore off. Around 10, I started to experience a terrible anxiety attack as my cramps suddenly resurfaced- anxiety is strongly related to stomach pain for me. I took another extra strength advil, and it’s been 50 minutes, and my stomach is still cramping furiously. I’ve also had 2 ativan for the anxiety, though I’m still shaking and flushed with heat. Should I try a different medication, like tylenol, to relieve my stomach cramps? I can’t imagine being able to sleep like this. More likely I’d go to the nearest hospital to try and get more help.
Brief Answer:
Ponstel/ Ponstan for menstrual pain
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Welcome to ‘Ask a Doctor’. I appreciate your concerns.
Sometimes the period pain can be very severe. Try using Ponstel/ Ponstan tablets. It contains mefenamic acid. They are slightly more effective than Advil. Also, use some local treatment like hot water-bag application on stomach, hot shower etc.
If this also does not relieve your pain, you may seek help from the hospital.
If you have further concerns, I will be happy to answer.
