Question : Hi, Please answer. My dad had a stroke. He has diabetes type 2. His Crp was 100 mg/dl plus when this happened. His CRP went down to 17 but then it is up again to 98 mg/dl. He has no fever. They don’t give him antibiotics. I am very nervous another stroke or heart attack will happen again with a crp this high and diabetes. I am attaching his recent bloodwork. Please help me and tell me what should be done.

Brief Answer:
He needs clopidogrel and rosuvastatin for stroke prevention.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for posting your query.

I have noted the clinical and laboratory details of your dad.

He has suffered a recent stroke and his CRP level is high.

He needs clopidogrel (a blood thinner) and rosuvastatin (a cholesterol lowering drug, and also useful in patients with high CRP). These two medicines are sufficient for stroke prevention. In addition he needs to keep his sugars under control.

High CRP does not mean infection in all cases, so, antibiotics are not needed in all cases. CRP is a marker of inflammation and rosuvastatin is known to have anti-inflammatory effects in patients.

I hope it helps.

Best wishes,
