What Should We Watch For After Removing A Big Tick Off One's Back?

default
Posted on Fri, 4 Oct 2019
Question: My husband just found a tick on his back. it has been there for a while e are guessing because of its size. Also there is a significantly large red area around it. Maybe a 2 inch circle/oval. We got the tick out and it looks like there are no remains on my husband's skin. We think we got the entire tick out. What should we watch for now? He says it itches. Do we need to do anything else?

Brief Answer:
Cortisone cream, antihistaminic, watch for fever, chills, vomiting, pain

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

I have reviewed the attached photographs.
It seems to be an urticarial reaction to the tick bite.
I would recommend you to apply cortisone cream on the affected areas twice daily and take antihistaminic like tablet Cetrizine 10 mg once or twice daily depending on the intensity of itching.
Sometimes patients may suffer from fever, chills, headache, abdominal pain and vomiting. These symptoms subside within 24-48 hours after removing the tick.
If any of these symptoms develop and persist for more than 2 days consult a doctor.

Dr Asmeet
