What Symptoms To Look For Post Mild Head Injury In Children?

Posted on Wed, 23 Sep 2015
Question: My 10 month old granddaughter was in the bath, her mum was holding her hand but she started to fall and actually swung around fast and hit her head, it was very loud and her mum screamed with the shock of the noise and the baby screamed for 5 mins. No other symptoms at all. She thought her baby hit the back of her but didn't find any bumps after thoroughly searching. The next day she found a fluid filled blue swelling, round, radius golf ball and 1.5 cm swelling above and toward back of her right ear ( not temple ). The baby was and is completely happy but the swelling is still there 5 days later. She took her to ER yesterday and they checked her out and put a compression bandage on it but no scan. We are still worried that this could be a fracture or that things could suddenly take a turn for the worse. What is your opinion please, thank you,
Meg

Brief Answer:
No need ti go for imaging at present

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXX,
I have gone through your question and understand your concerns.
Head injury in childhood is common .
The danger signs related to head injury in child are excessive crying, vomiting, drowsiness, loss of consciousness, seizures, motor deficit, bleeding through nose and ear.
Chances of fracture in children is less as bone is soft and sutures are not fused leading to possibility of mobility.
Localized swelling occurs due to impact at the site.
If she is not having any troublesome symptoms then imaging may not be needed.
Consult a pediatrician if you found any progression in symptoms or swelling.
Hope you found the answer helpful.

Thank you, can you please explain why the swelling feels like liquid and not like a typical bruise that would clot under the skin. Could it be CSF ?

Brief Answer:
Go for CT head

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX
It's less likely that fracture with tear of tough dura covering occurred during head injury.
The hematoma formation liquefies with time.
If you are still in doubt you can get CT head plain with bone window to look for any fracture.
Hope you found the answer helpful.Regards
