Question : My husband age 83 has had problems with his lower legs swelling since 2015 surgery when an iv drug infiltrated and caused major skin eruptions in his left lower leg. He continues to have blistered rough and reddened skin now on both legs and we have tried everything his BUN is slightly elevated and I am wondering if we should check his plasma ammonia levels. something is causing the body to filter through the skin the impurities normally passed out through the kidneys and liver. What do you think and what do you think we might try to heal this up. They finally had to totally remove his left hip due to infection a very long story. I am a nurse and I am stumped as to what treatment to try next Docs here don't seem to know what to do either.
Brief Answer:
Vuscular insufficiency
Detailed Answer:
Dear sir, I have gone through your question and I understand your concerns but these symptoms are suggestive of vascular or lymphatic insufficiency.. This possibility is also augmented by the history of limb surgery.. I would recommend that you get a Doppler ultrasound on your lower limbs to asses the arterial, venous and lymphatic status and detect any obstructions that could result in chronic stasis dermatitis Also I would recommend that you get a blood test for hepatic functions (AST and ALT) instead of the ammonia blood level as a preliminary measure to asses hepatic function. if found abnormal then you should get the blood test for ammonia level..I hope you find this helpful..
