Question : Hello Doctor,

I want to ask about my father. He is 69 Years Old.
From past 1 year we are observing his weight is reducing GRADUALLY.

From past 4 months back (in April) we went for a wedding (in a village). After having food their he fall sick with Diarrhea for 1 week. And he has become lean (quick) weight reduced to 60kgs. He had weakness, muscles pain and sometimes joints pain.

Medical History - Hight BP from past 15 Years. He takes tabs and it is in control (140/70).

2 weeks back we visited a Doctor and had a general checkup. There we got to know he is having High Blood Sugar (Fasting - 450, PPBS- around 400). He had NO Symptoms. Vitamin B12 - 79. Rest all test result were in range.

He was admitted in hospitals for 3 days, diagnosed for Blood Sugar (Now, Fasting - 85, PPBS - 170) and was given vitamin supplements via IV.

Now his medications are:

1. Amlodac-AT 1-0-1
2. Clopivas 0-1-0
3. Novostat 0-0-1
4. Ondero 1-0-0
5. Biohom in 1-0-0
6. Glycomet-GP2 1-0-1 (Before Food)
7. Prohance-D (1 scoop) 1-0-1
8. duphalac syrup 0-0-1 (1 spoon)

He took Rablet-l 1-0-1 (Before food) for 15 days. It got over.
Diet as advised by Dietitian.

He had muscles pain (Calf and thigh) so we stopped giving Novostat 0-0-1 (5 mg) (as advised by doctor in healthcare magic, last taken on Monday night). The pain has reduced now.

He is having Gastric and loose stool during night after 11pm or 12 am. He will have dinner around 8:30 pm (chapatti n rice) and go to bed around 9:30 pm or 10pm.

What would be the cause for Gastric? Is it because of any tablets side effects? Please Advice.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

After going through the medical details provided by you of your father I can understand your concern for his health and I would like like to tell you that yes that’s happening because of the effect of the medicine.

He is taking Duphalac syrup which is used to treat constipation. In some patients, it can cause loose stool. So it’s advisable to discontinue duphalac and give him ORS to drink and he will be alright.

I hope this information will answer your query and will guide you properly.

Kind Regards

What would be the cause for Gastric (sound in stomach) ? is this because of medicines?

He has stopped taking Novostat 5mg 0-0-1 from 3 days and Prohance-D (1 scoop) from 2 days. He is alright, there is NO Gastric.

So stopping these medicines should effect his health ?

Hello again

Detailed Answer:
Yes it could be because of medicinal effect.

If his cholesterol levels are normal then novastat can be stopped.

Prohance D is a supplement and he can take it now.

Cholesterol levels - HDL-24 and LDL-128 (results as on August 3rd 2018).

Which tab was causing Gastric? I will get it replaced with other brand/composition.

Hello again

Detailed Answer:
His cholesterol levels are fine so you can just keep novastat on hold.

That gastric sounds and gastric upset/loose stools was due to the effect of duphalac. There is no need to take that again if he is not having constipation.

Hope to have been helpful

Detailed Answer:
Hello again,

Continue taking Rabeprazole as advised for another 2 weeks as he is having burps. The effect might take 12 to 24 hrs to nullify and in some up to 36 hrs also.

If even then it won’t subside (loose stools) then you should discuss with your treating doctor personally and can start him on capsule Bifilac.

Hope to have been helpful.
