Whatc Auses Itching And Burning On Caruncle Of Eye?

default
Posted on Tue, 2 Dec 2014
Question: So for the last 2-3 days my caruncle of my right eye has been a little bit itchy and kinda burning a little bit. It also feels slightly swollen and kinda looks a little swollen when stretching my eye lid open and really looking at it. It also looks a little swollen and maybe slightly red compared to my left caruncle. Now my eye itself doesnt appear red or pink or anything. No watery eye or blurred vision. And the itch, swelling felling, and burning isn't major or anything just a little annoying and concerning. Just curious what it may be? I have heard a few suggest caruncilitis and that it is not serious and should go away on its own without having to see a doctor or do anything but just wait it out. Also can I continue to wear my contacts? I have asked this question on other medical website and was told not to worry and just ignore it and it will go away on its own with no in person doctors visit or any type of drops or medication. Just looking for second opinion.

Brief Answer:
It looks like inflammation of caruncle.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Welcome to Health care magic.

I am Dr. Dadapeer K, an ophthalmologist and I answer health problems related to eye.

I reviewed your history.
The symptoms you have mentioned indicate a probable inflammation of the caruncle in the form of carunculitis or inflammation of the canthus in the form of angular conjunctivitis.
Carunculitis is usually a self limiting and self resolving non specific inflammation of the caruncle. No treatment is generally required as it resolves by 3-5 days even without treatment.
If you are having persistent symptoms you need to use antiinflammatory eye drops for symptomatic relief.

Angular conjunctivitis on the other hand runs a chronic course with symptoms of irritation at the angles of the eye involving the surrounding skin. This needs treatment by antibiotic and astringent eye drops.

Your case appears more like carunculitis, hence no need to worry.
It is better to avoid use of contact lenses till the symptoms resolve.

If possible do send a photo of the affected so that I can confirm the diagnosis and advice you more accurately.

Hope the information is helpful to you.

Thank you

Brief Answer:
It is inflammation of caruncle.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thank you for the follow up question.

I saw the photos attached with the question.
The eye appears almost normal except for slight swelling of the caruncle.
This is inflammation of caruncle and it is resolving.
No treatment is required and it may resolve in another 1-3 days.
If the symptoms persist I would like treat with topical antiinflammatory eye drops like Ketotolac or Bromfenac eye drops.

You can start the use of contact lenses also as the inflammation is almost minimal.

Hope the information is helpful to you.

Brief Answer:
If there are no symptoms then you can use contacts

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thank you for the follow up question.

I reviewed all the photos attached with the question.
The eye appears fairly normal and there is no redness, hence there is not much inflammation. Hence you can use the contact lenses as the inflammation is almost resolved.
But if you are still having the symptoms then you can use the anti-inflammatory eye drops as I have advised previously for 2-3 days and start using the contact lenses after 2-3 days.

Hope the information is helpful to you.

Do write back to me for further questions.

Thank you
